This is the back jacket author photo for the first Russell Quant book, Amuse Bouche. This was the first time I had my photograph taken professionally as an author. I was excited to do it - it seemed a bit of a right of passage for me. I pay attention to the cover photos that authors use, and I promised myself, even back then when I had no idea whether there would even be another book, that if there were, I would have a new author photo for each one. So far I've been able to keep that promise.

This is the photo used on the back jacket cover for the second Russell Quant book, Flight of Aquavit. It's a picture of me on the deck of the Silver Whisper cruiseship, September 2002, as it departs Barcelona for a seven day voyage that would include Minorca, Tunis,Palermo, Messina,Salerno and finally Rome. It was my first time on a cruise, I was excited and nervous and really needed that glass of champagne.

This is the author photo for the back jacket of the third Russell Quant book, Tapas on the Ramblas. In actuality, the photo used for the second book, Flight of Aquavit, was taken on the cruise on which this third book is loosely based.

This is the author photo used for the back jacket cover for the fourth Russell Quant book, Stain of the Berry. It was taken by the terrific Kevin Hogarth, and we were particularly pleased with how the deep golden tones of the photograph blended so nicely with the front cover image which was selected some time later.

This is the back jacket author photo used for the fifth Russell Quant book, Sundowner Ubuntu. It was taken in Botswana, atop Mmamagwa Hill. Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana's Tuli Block is one of the key locations featured in Sundowner Ubuntu.

PlanetS is a local Saskatoon arts and entertainment news magazine. They graciously offered to do a piece on me, and gave me the cover, which was shot by Kevin Hogarth Photography. It was blustery cold and beginning to snow the day of the shoot. We had to keep on running into vehicles to get warm between shots. This one was taken in the middle of 21rst Street, downtown, in front of the historic Bessborough Hotel. Of course the street was not closed down for this momentous occassion (momentous for me) - so I had to keep on dodging traffic and trying to get into a half decent, relaxed looking pose before the next car mowed me down. Fun.

This is another Hogarth photo. As it turns out, the best photos were the ones where my body was contorted into an unhuman form and, in that most uncomfortable pose, I stared into the camera without a care in the world.

This is one of the few professional photos where I'm smiling. Some photographers I've come across don't seem to think smiling is appropriate for an author photo, particularly since I write mystery. They think mystery writers should be serious and noirish looking. Perhaps they've not read a Russell Quant mystery.

This is one of the photos taken by Cindy Moleski Photography. I really like the simplicity of the set. And this shoot took almost no time at all. Although they weren't my Wonderpants (see Russell Quant books), those were my favourite jeans for a long time.

I call this my white summer wedding suit. Not because I got married in it, but because the summer of 2007 was one of the busiest in recent memory for weddings we were invited to. I wore this same suit to a few of them. I like the idea of a white summer wedding suit, it kind of makes me feel like I just hopped out of a Roadster or attended a Great Gatsby garden party down by the lake. And, incidentally, this suit made me learn just how well those Tide pens really work!

This picture has nice memories attached to it. It's from a trip we took with our good friends Pat and Lynne, to one of our favourite spots, Zihuatenjo, Mexico. It was the end of a sun-drenched day on the beach, we'd all gotten cleaned up and were about to head out for margueritas and dinner when someone snapped this photo.

This was taken in the scenic hilltop town of Gassin, France. It was a beautiful early fall day, where all we had on our agenda for the day was finding a good cup of coffee and a market to buy fixings for that evening's dinner.

It was a blisteringly hot day in Nice, France. I'd worn a heavy shirt that was slowly melting me into a mass of Canadian bacon, so we went shopping. For some reason I allowed the shopkeeper to talk me into this T which I felt was too tight and made me feel rather self-conscious all day. It's hard sightseeing and sucking in your gut all day.

It was standing room only for my first ever book launch in Victoria, British Columbia at the fantastic Chronicles of Crime bookshop. Thus, the smile. The fact that the owner dressed up as one of the characters in Tapas on the Ramblas helped too.

On the beach at Zihuatanejo, Mexico - one of my favourite places. It was one of those soon-to-be-dusk, take-off-your-shoes-and-shirt walks on the beach on the way to dinner, with a soft wind blowing and a gentle light that made everything look kind of dreamy. (I take all the help I can get).

Formal night aboard the Silverseas Whisper cruiseship. I think we were somewhere between Spain and Italy. We had arranged a small party that included the ship's concierge, the stunningly beautiful woman who sold Bulgari products at one the ship's shops, her equally stunning sailor fiancee, the casino manager, and several of our new on board acqaintances. It was a sparkling night in many ways.

Anthony Bidulka Winter 2010 - Say what you will about winter, but there is nothing quite the same as a lovely winter's morning with hoar frost painting the trees. This winter in particular has been incredible for hoar frost - many more days than usual where we're woken up to this scene in our front yard - which, according to some, means a wet spring.
