Author Cover Photo - When The Saints Go Marching In: An Adam Saint Novel #1
This is the author photo for the first Adam Saint novel (Spring 2013). It was taken in an atmospheric back alley in Saskatoon. The day was sunny but very cold. The lighting was gorgeous so we kept going. Thanks to the magic of my photographer, Kevin Hogarth, you can't tell that I was freezing and my nose eventually became irreparably red.

This was my very first ever author photo shoot. I was excited to do it because somehow it made the whole being a published author thing real. It was still months before I'd see the first copy, but this was an exhilarating beginning to my new career.
The photographer, Stuart Kasdorf, ended up doing the shoot in my home which probably helped to make me a little more comfortable with the process. I totally have new respect for people who model for a living. It ain't as easy as it looks! One wrong crook of the mouth and you have a crappy picture.
Author Photo-Flight of Aquavit: A Russell Quant Mystery #2
This is the author cover photo for the second Russell Quant mystery. By this point I decided a couple things about the author photos I'd use for my books.
First, I wanted to have a new photo with each book. I decided this for two reasons. One, as a reader I like it when an author photo changes regularly; having the same photo book after book is a bit boring to me. Two, I'd heard horror stories about how some authors would rarely or never change their photo and then they'd show up at some author event and the readers wouldn't recognize them.
Second, I thought that every so often I would throw in a private photo rather than a professional shot. Seems a bit more personal.
This was the first of three private shots I ended up using as cover author photos for the Russell Quant series.
You might not guess it, but this picture captures a rather important moment for me. I am aboard my first cruise ship and feeling a little ambivalent (scared) about staying aboard. We were about to depart from the first port (Barcelona) and I am drinking a fair bit of champagne to give me courage (At the time I didn't know how to swim).
Actually, this photo would have been more appropriate to use for the third Quant book, Tapas On The Ramblas, which was loosely based on this voyage.

I was in the studio of photographer Cindy Moleski for this author photo. Although I had brought a few different clothing options, we ended up using this simple shot with me in front of a blank wall wearing jeans and a T. The jeans were my Wonderpants (see Russell Quant for definition) at the time.
Author Photo - Stain of the Berry: A Russell Quant Mystery #4
This began my long history with photographer Kevin Hogarth. He's now done several of my author photos as well as my wedding/elopement pictures, and several pics for various magazines and papers.
I knew what the book's cover image was going to be and wanted the author photo to have some of the same feel and colour tone and texture to it. I also made a point of telling Kevin to not be afraid of showing my wrinkles. So I like this picture because it looks pretty real. And it ended up that this was the photograph McNally Robinson bookstore in my hometown of Saskatoon used for their in-store author gallery.
Author Photo - Sundowner Ubuntu: A Russell Quant Mystery #5
This is the second private photo I've used as a book's author photo. This one fit perfectly with the books content. In part Sundowner Ubuntu takes place in Africa. This picture was taken when I was on safari in Botswana and Zambia.
Author Photo - Aloha, Candy Hearts: A Russell Quant Mystery #6
This is one of my favourite author photos, the second with photographer Kevin Hogarth. This time we really worked on trying to get that man-of-mystery thing going, with the dark shadows and half unrevealed face.
Author Photo - Date With a Sheesha: A Russell Quant Mystery #7
This is the third private picture I used as a book's cover photo. Like with Sundowner Ubuntu, I chose this photo because it shows me in the same exotic locale that Russell Quant visits in the book, this time the Arabian desert.
Here we were on a sand dune buggy ride that was a little wild. They lower the tire pressure which allows the vehicle to do some crazy acrobatics up and down the side of the huge sand dunes. We ended the trip by getting on the backs of camels and riding them further into the desert to an encampment for dinner under the stars. Very cool. It was also where I smoked my first - and perhaps last - sheesha.
Author Photo - Dos Equis: A Russell Quant Mystery #8
Up until this point, all the professional author photos I'd done were shot indoors. Partly this was a timing issue, getting the photos done in winter, which has its downside in terms of photography.
For the eighth Russell Quant book I planned ahead. Every time I'd see the blooming fields of canola that explode around Saskatoon each summer in vast canvases of brilliant yellow, I'd think: I really need to use this natural treasure in an author photo one day. Not only would it make a stunning background, but I thought it was a perfect representative showcase for me as a Saskatchewan author. Not to mention that I am Ukrainian and my blue shirt and yellow canola perfectly match the colours of the flag of Ukraine.

August, 2016 - Writing at our place in Providenciales. This was the first time I seriously took an extended time away, from my usual writing spot in my office at home, to write elsewhere. I worried the sun and sand would prove too much of a distraction, but thankfully it worked.
