Book: QUANT: Russell Quant Mystery #9 📖
Author: Anthony Bidulka ✍️
Review: QUANT is an engaging mystery that combines a compelling investigation with family, community, and plenty of personality. Russell Quant returns to his hometown of Howell, Saskatchewan, where what initially appears to be a suicide quickly raises questions that refuse to disappear.
When beloved local handyman Clem Toth is found dead at the bottom of a gorge, his widow CeeCee insists that something is terribly wrong. Russell takes the case personally, especially because he has known Clem and CeeCee for years. As he digs deeper, the investigation uncovers suspicious connections involving a greenhouse, local land, business interests, and people Russell once considered part of his community.
I particularly enjoyed how the mystery develops alongside Russell’s personal life. His concerns about his mother, her changing health, and the emotional weight of returning to his childhood home give the story a heartfelt layer beyond the central crime. His relationship with JP also adds warmth and humor, balancing the darker elements of the investigation.
The small-town setting works beautifully, too. Beneath the familiar faces and quiet prairie atmosphere are secrets, competing interests, old relationships, and tensions that gradually come to the surface. Russell’s investigation keeps uncovering new questions, making it difficult to know who can truly be trusted.
With its mix of mystery, humor, emotional depth, family dynamics, and a strong sense of place, QUANT is an entertaining addition to the Russell Quant series. It feels like both a crime investigation and a deeply personal journey home.
A character-driven mystery with plenty of twists, warmth, and prairie charm. 🔎📚
